Living in a Material World

With the rising culture of the tastemakers, largely fueled by the social media, the auction houses have entered the arena of defining and redefining those proponents, leaders in matters of style and taste. In the fall, Sotheby’s will present ‘Living in a Material World’, an auction dedicated to cutting edge design, with a focus on exploring the way in which key designers have employed materials in new ways. Tastemaker Tony Chambers, Editor-in-Chief of the influential design and lifestyle magazine Wallpaper* was selected to curate that event, examining through some of the best furniture created in recent years the story of materials. From traditional methods, polished in the digital world, to radical materials, to the use of the most technologically advanced tools available, from wood to concrete, plastics, to stone, the selection of objects comes to tell the story of materials in the world of design. The auction will take place at Sotheby’s London on 17 October 2017. Above: Marc Newson ‘Extruded Table 3’, 2008 (est. £70,000-100,000)
