ALet’s remember Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer who was born 109 years ago today in Rio de Janeiro. Best known for designing the civic buildings for Brasília, Brazil’s capital in the 60s, and for his collaboration with other architects on the headquarters of the United Nations in New York, Niemeyer also designed furniture, and was recognized in the US when his work was showcased in the 1943 landmark exhibition ‘Brazil Builds’ at MoMA. All images from the excellent exhibition at Laffanour Downtown Gallery in Paris, opened in 2012, just amonth before the architect died at the age of 104.
