When a famous musician’s design dream comes true. It has been considered one of the most magical American esidences of the mid-century years, the recently restored home which George Nelson designed in the 50s (completed, 1958) for his friends the Kirkpatricks, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. With an incredible taste, and personalized details, testimony to the allure of the Age of Mad Men, this house was offered for sale in the summer, with all of its original Herman Miller furniture – for $450K. Now I read in a great article in The New Yorker that the new owner of this gem is rocker Jack White, native of Detroit, formerly of the White Stripes, and owner of label Third Man Records. According to the article, White has not seen the houses before purchasing it, but being a former upholsterer’s apprentice and a great enthusiast of design and furniture, like many collectors of architecture, he perceives himself “custodian” of the property rather than owner.
