London’s design lovers, supporters, and the design community are all showing a spectacular support for the upcoming opening of the Design Museum in its new location in Kensington. In a special benefit auction, ‘Time for Design,’ the Museum’s friends and such leading designers as Jony Ive, Marc Newson, Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Thomas Heatherwick, David Adjaye, Ron Arad, have donated works, of which proceeds will go towards realizing the Design Museum’s ambitious new building. The upcoming auction, which will be handled by Phillips is going to be one of the more talk-about design events of the spring. Among the objects for sale are: Bono’s Irish Green Falcon guitar; iPad Pro special edition, number 1/1 designed by Jony Ive; Norman Foster’s 224-238 t‘Arc’ table 2015; Marc Newson’s silver Tea Set 2015; Herzog & de Meuron’s Bird’s Nest chandelier, designed for the Beijing Olympic Stadium; Zaha Hadid’s Three Bianco Covelano Mercuric Tables and Serif 2 Shelf. The move to the new building, the former Commonwealth Institute Building, was re-constructed by the developer Chelsfield and is being remodeled internally by John Pawson, comes to provide three times more space than in its current location at Shad Thames. It is a wonderful opportunity to acquire design masterpieces and to help one of my most favorite design museums. On top: Ron Arad’s ‘D-Sofa’, 1994 – donated by Johannes and Helene Huth.
