So often I am asked on a good way to learn about the history of design and decorative arts. I am pleased to tell you that finally, a survey course opened to the public will be launched this spring by my alma mater, the Brad Graduate Center. This five-week program, History of Design and Decorative Arts will be taught by faculty members specializing in the various topics. The topics covers will include Chinese decorative arts from 1300 to 1800; European Renaissance and Early Modern decorative arts; 19th and 20th century modern design in Europe and the United States; and Islamic decorative arts of the classical period and beyond. The Bard Graduate Center is a graduate research institute and intellectual community devoted to studying the cultural histories of the material world. Its programs for the scholarly and general public, along with its critically acclaimed exhibitions, make it a key venue for advanced discussion of design, decorative arts and material culture.
