In the class devoted to the American Studio Movement this morning at the New York School of Interior Design, our speaker, Joshua Aibel, second generation dealer at Moderne Gallery in Philadelphia founded by his father Bob, spoke brilliantly about NYC-based acclaimed potter Estelle Halper (1918-1980) who worked primarily in stoneware. In the mid-century her work had become known for its unique formulas of glazes, which she developed and formulated, many of which were “volcanic” glazes. At her time, her expressive pottery was recognized for its artistic representations, and was often featured in group shows at various museums in the US, and was sold through several galleries specializing in studio crafts, including Georg Jensen and the famed America House. Halper was internationally recognized and her work has been collected for many years.Thank you, Josh Aibel for participating and supporting the program Collecting Design: History, Collections, Highlights, the only program of its kind which comes to educate architects, interior designers, and collectors on the marketplace for modern and contemporary design.
