I am so pleased and honored to tell you all, that in celebrating the upcoming design season in NYC, I will be curating and moderating a panel discussion at the New York School of Interior Design entitled ‘Joseph Walsh: Crafting the Contemporary.’ This event is particularly special to me, as I have been an admirer of Walsh’s work from the first moment I have seen it, and the title comes to summarize his vision and the key role of craft in the design culture of our era. Walsh, an Irish master maker and furniture designer of an international acclaim, has formulated a unique and personal language based on the art of bending and laminating ash and other indigenous timber, reflecting his heritage. In this discussion, I seek to position Walsh, who has exhibited internationally, and whose work is included in collections of such museums as the Centre Pompidou and the National Museum of Ireland, within the fabric of contemporary design and within that of Irish design and heritage. Joseph Walsh will be speaking, as well as two of my favorite design curators, Jennifer Goff, curator of furniture, silver, and the Eileen Gray Collection at the National Museum of Ireland; and Glenn Adamson, design curator and scholar.
