Think about walking deep into a forest painted in white, where everything is pure, sleek, glowing, and perfectly white, from the ground, to the sky, and all in between. This is exactly how I felt when visiting the new solo exhibition of Brussels-based designer Jos Devriendt (b. 1964) at Demisch Danant. Entitled ‘I AM I,’ this beautiful installation contains dozens and dozens of lamps and vessels, all made in sleek white porcelain, leading you to understand that there are many shades of white, each has its own identity, each stands on its own in the way it corresponds to the light. When it comes to the theme of the archetypal mushroom, which has been woven in Devriendt’s oeuvre for years, the forms are particularly successful. Magical, when they are placed and perceived in the context shown at the gallery. In the series “Night and Day,” which is a part of this installation, Devriendt experiments with shaping the forms in various times of the day, exploring the difference between artificial light and daylight, both penetrating through the white body.
