Moving between fashion and nature has informed the life journey of Anne Fontaine, the famed designer who has made her name for reinventing the white shirt. Since founding her ultra-successful fashion brand, with her husband-partner Ari Zlotkin, over three decades ago, Fontaine has not only expanded to include lines of ready-to-wear stylish fashion in her own signature style, but also founded the Anne Fontaine Foundation. It comes to raise awareness about environmental issues through reforestation and protection of the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest. In celebrating the International Forest Day, held annually on 21 March, we were hosted this morning by Anne and Dorothée Charles, Executive Director of the Anne Fontaine Foundation, at her chic boutique on Madison Avenue to learn about her activist initiative, about her vision, and about passionate life that encompasses fashion and caring for the future of our planet. To her, it began when living in the Brazilian Amazons among the tribes as a teenager, and continued with efforts for the benefit of the disappearing forests. Today, let’s remember the importance of the forests, which support over billion people across the globe, including thousands of indigenous cultures, depending on them for their livelihoods, medicines, fuel, food and shelter.
