As in every third week of June, the European edition of Design Miami/Basel fair opens tomorrow in Basel, the design counterpart of Art Basel. It comes to provide a platform and to showcase the most up-to-date directions in the world of collectible modern and contemporary design, through participating galleries and special projects. Opening its 12th edition, the fair consists of founding galleries along with newcomers, which tend to introduce new material never seen before at Design Miami/Basel. Traditionally, I am bringing my own selects from the rich and diverse material that you would see when visiting Basel this week. The fair is open to the public from June 13th through the 18th. Oscar Humphries, the Australian fine art and design dealer presents an installation that includes chairs from the RAI Auditorium in Torino, which Carlo Mollino created in 1952, along with screening of a film by director Felipe Sanguinetti exploring the notion of the theater in Mollino’s architectural practice; Carpenters Workshop Gallery shows a fabulous floor lamp by Nacho Carbonell; Galerie Pascal Cuisinier presents a beautiful example of the modernism desk which Phillipon/Lecoq created in the 60s and which I adore; Dansk Mobelkunst Gallery, the leading authority in rare, original works of Danish furniture brings “Architect’s Desk,” which Hans Wegner designed in 1953. I will update this post during the week. Above: Galerie Matthieu Richard, Bench by Mathieu Mategot, 1956
