I was first introduced to the work of Studio Formafantasma, the Amsterdam-based design duo at Gallery Libby Sellers in London a couple of years ago. The Italian duo Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin are the talents behind Studio Formafantasma, and like other graduates from the Design Academy of Eindhoven, they create conceptual, fresh, unorthodox design, full of meanings and rich in context, utilizing traditional and modern craft and production methods, and combining materials in the most unexpected way. Now, in collaborating with Roman Design Gallery Giustini / Stagetti Galleria O. Roma, Formafantasma has created a new collection ‘Delta,’ curated by Domitilla Dardi, which is a part of the gallery’s program ’Privato Romano Interno,’ and will be shown at the gallery starting this month. Curated since 2012 by Emanuela Nobile Mino, the project comes to revive Roman heritage through commissioning international designers with collections inspired by the history of Rome. In Delta, Formafantasma has created refined objects (lights, cabinet, and a mirror) of various materials, marbles, metals, porcelain, wood, with a reference not only to the Tevere River, which is the main watercourse of Rome, but also to the architectural fabric of Rome, assembled over centuries. ‘Delta’ is a perfect example of conceptual design of the type that not only consists of a strong and intriguing narrative, but also reflects the signature and elegant aesthetics, the chic touch of Formafantasma.
