This week was marked by one of the most important annual events in the architectural world, the 2018 Pritzker Prize, handed in Toronto to Indian architect, urban planner, and educator Balkrishna Doshi (b. 1927), recognizing 70-year career. It was 67 years ago that Doshi attended the International Congress of Modern Architecture in Hoddesdon, England, where he was invited to the Parisian office of Le Corbusier to work on his most significant urban project, Chandigarh. Doshi worked on the iconic High Court and Governor’s Palace in Chandigarh, as well as on the Shodhan House, Villa Sarabhai, and the Mill Owners’ Association Building in Ahmedabad, traveling between France and India. “My works are an extension of my life, philosophy, and dreams trying to create treasury of the architectural spirit,” he said. “I owe this prestigious prize to my guru, le Corbusier. His teachings led me to question identity and compelled me to discover new regionally adopted contemporary expression for a sustainable holistic habitat.”
