Among the most exciting buildings to open their doors in 2017 is Apple Campus 2, designed by Foster + Partners as an enormous and perfect hoop-shaped complex, containing of research and development facilities and offices (above). The notion of the perfect round city that would transform society and express power and spiritualry was first originated in the city of Baghdad, founded in the 8th century as the capital of the Islamic empire under the Abbasid Caliphate. Thousands of architects, engineers, and craftsmen were employed in creating the circlular city, measured 2 km across, in which center stood the two finest of all buildings: the Great Mosque and the Caliph’s residence. Another ideal round city was the City of Chaux in eastern France, designed by 18th-century Enlightenment architect Claude-Nicolas Ledoux, seeking to arrange the city according to a rational geometry and a hierarchical relation between the parts of the project. It was the Royal Saltworks, when salt was an essential commodity necessary for food preservation. Another utopian example, the Venus Project designed by Jacque Fresco, the social engineer and author, comes to present a new direction for humanity that entails the total redesign of our culture. So lets welcome the new circular Apple Campus 2 in 2017.
