I am delighted to announce here for the first time about the upcoming event that I will moderate in celebrating NYCxDESIGN. Entitled “Collecting and Living with Danish Modern: Crafting Modern Lifestyle,” it will take place at the Center for Architecture/AIA on May 14th, supported by Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers. In the panel, three of the world’s best experts on the topic: Peter Kjelgaard Jensen, Head of Modern Design at Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers; James Zemaitis, Curator and Director of Museum Relations, R & Compan; Vance Trimble, designer and collector. Danish Modern has found its way into millions of homes across the globe, shaping the taste of the public away from antiques into the modern. In its heyday, it was perceived as the ultimate combination of fine craftsmanship, simplicity, and function. Its “good,” democratic style become the blockbuster of the design world. By the 1970s, together with the entire mid-century design culture, its allure had faded and interest declined, pushing Danish Modern away from mainstream aesthetics. It has made a remarkable comeback since 2000, desired by collectors, utilized by architects creating curated and chic interiors, and presented in art fairs, museums, explored in scholarship, publications, and endless headlines.
How do we look at Danish Modern today and how has it changed? Who is in and who is out on the list of Danish designers? How has the renewed interest generated rediscoveries of historical figures? What is the role of provenance? What is the best way to source Danish Modern? Who are the major players in the international marketplace? This evening comes to celebrate Danish Modern and to illuminate on its current identity. The event will conclude with a reception. Registration is open now and spaces are limited.
